MORE INFORMATION IS BELOW

Dear Music Patron:

I am pleased to invite you to the season-opening concert by Virginia Tech’s
University Symphonic Wind Ensemble on Friday evening, October 13th,
8:00p.m., Burruss Auditorium. For this event, we have two special guest
collaborators: the Panjammers Steel Drum Orchestra and Mr. Mark Greeley,
clarinet soloist.

The Wind Ensemble will begin the concert, opening with Richard Strauss’
Serenade, op. 7 for 13 Winds (1881), timeless music written by a late
teenager! The full ensemble continues with short inclusions by Vaughan
Williams and Bach, before featuring alumni guest soloist Mark Greeley in
Martin Ellerby’s recent Clarinet Concerto (2000).

Rounding our their presentation will be a hymn for peace of Robert Spittal,
another work of hope in response to tragedy by Robert Hutchinson, and a
100th birthday salute for Dmitri Shostakovich: his Festive Overture, op. 96.
Before intermission, the Wind Ensemble will be joined by Blacksburg’s own
Panjammers Steel Drum Orchestra in a fun adaptation of an island classic,
Ary Barosso’s Brazil.

The second half of the concert will include a festive set of tropical tunes
from the Panjammers, directed by Richard Rudolf. This ensemble was formed in
2004, and enjoys participation by about 30 adventurous “panners”, spanning
more than two generations in age.

Tickets for the event are available at the door: $5.00 general admission,
$3.00 for students and seniors.

Our University Symphonic Wind Ensemble has a full season of interesting
music to explore and perform. Other concert dates and general information
can be found at:

We hope you can join us for this first offering on Friday the 13th!

Warm regards,
