Here's a reminder, folks, that our sometime partners in crime, the
Blacksburg Community Strings, have a Fall Concert coming up this
Sunday evening. Past and present band members Mary Walters, Kellie
Keeling, Megan Bradley, Bruce McGarvey, Danny Corneliussen and Dillon
Meacham will be joining the strings.
The Blacksburg Community Strings and Chamber Orchestra welcome back
their founding conductor, Elizabeth Austin, as guest soloist on their
Fall Concert on Sunday, October 29, at 8 p.m. in the Recital Salon of
Squires Student Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Austin will be
playing Joseph Haydn's Concerto for Violoncello in C Major. A former
member of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra now living, playing and
teaching in Clemson, South Carolina, Austin plays a cello made by
Blacksburg luthier Daniel Foster, who is principal cellist in the
ensemble.
Also on the program are Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 3," Sir
Edward Elgar's two miniature tone poems, "Chanson de nuit" and
"Chanson de matin" for chamber orchestra, and two works originally
composed as tributes. Edvard Grieg composed his "Holberg Suite" for
string orchestra for the 200th anniversary of the birth in 1684 of
Ludwig Baron Holberg, considered the Father of Scandanavian
Literature, while Tchaikovsky's "Elegie for Strings" was composed in
the same year for the Jubilee celebration of noted actor and Moscow
Conservatory drama professor Ivan Samarin's 50 years as an artist,
and published a few years after Samarin's death with a dedication to
his memory.
The concert is free and open to the public. A Preview Concert will
be given in Newport, Virginia, at the Newport Recreation Center (the
old high school) at 7:30 the previous evening, Saturday, October 28.
